Classification by Manufacturing Process

The two primary categories are based on how the pipe is formed:
• Seamless Pipes (SMLS): Made by piercing a solid steel billet to create a hollow tube without any weld seams. These are preferred for high-pressure and high-temperature environments like hydraulic cylinders, boilers, and oil refineries.
• Welded Pipes: Manufactured by rolling steel plates or strips into a cylinder and welding the edges.
o ERW (Electric Resistance Welded): Uses high-frequency electric current to fuse edges; common in water supply and infrastructure.
o SAW (Submerged Arc Welded): Often used for large-diameter pipes. Includes LSAW (straight seam) and SSAW (spiral seam), suitable for oil and gas pipelines.
